At the age of seventeen, Javier Zambrano was much like any other teenager focused on completing his baccalaureate education, enjoying time with friends and playing sports. One of Javier’s favorite pastimes included playing tennis; a sport he enjoyed from a very young age.

In April of 1993, Javier was involved in an accident that resulted in the amputation of his right foot. The period after the unfortunate incident and subsequent surgery were extremely trying times for both Javier and his family. In September of the same year, he received his first prosthetic at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. The prosthetic opened up an array of possibilities that allowed him to almost fully return to his rhythm of life prior to the accident. However, the side effects of his prosthetic required him to use a cane and a very specific type of shoe. It also resulted in severe pain and discomfort that limited his physical ability.

After several visits with the surgeon, Javier began to seriously consider further amputating his leg in the hopes of finding a better fit for his prosthetic.  By a chance of fate, Javier met Mr. Eugenio R. Silva, an American Board Certified Prosthetist-Orthotist. Mr. Silva insisted that the answer did not lay in expanding upon the amputation but rather finding the right prosthetic technology that would fit the amputee’s needs. Thanks to Mr. Silva’s assistance Javier routinely plays tennis and incorporates CrossFit into his physical activities.
